Fairhope, Alabama is one of two single tax colonies remaining in the United States (the other is in Arden, Delaware). The community was established in 1894 by a group from Des Moines, Iowa, headed by Ernest B. Gaston. The founders saw it fit to name some streets in the original residential areas after fruits and nuts native to the region. Truly unique homes from bungalows to bayside mansions. There is some debate today as to whether or not these names apply more to the vegetation or the residents :0
