The Brown Pelican virtually disappeared from the Mobile Bay area due to the hunting for its feathers in the 1900s and the use of DDT in the 1940s. In 1979, dredging of the ship channel created a spoil island (Gaillard Island) in the middle of the bay. In 1983, biologists discovered nesting brown pelicans there and today this preserve is the only nesting site for the brown pelican in Alabama.
